CHAPTER 5

Kasey in Trouble

Ipicked up Kasey and hurried into the kitchen. Dad was still trying to fill the kitten’s food dishes, so I moved close to him and leaned against his side.

He gave me a surprised look. “What’s up?”

“Someone’s here to see you,” I told him.

He frowned. “Okay? Why are you holding Kasey?”

“It’s the Sampsons.”

“The Sampsons?” he said, following me toward the front door.

They were still waiting on the top step as Dad walked up to them.

“Hello?” Dad said.

I set Kasey down on the ground and hunkered beside her, wrapping my arms around her neck. For some reason, I didn’t think this was going to be a good meeting between the parents.

“Mr. Cyprus?” asked Mrs. Sampson.

“Yes, please call me Albert,” he said, holding out his hand.

Mr. Sampson shook it, but Mrs. Sampson just tilted up her head, looking down her nose at Dad.

“Mr. Cyprus,” said Mrs. Sampson again. “I would appreciate it if your daughter and her dog were not in the room while we talked. Do you mind if we come in?”

Dad glanced at me. “Well, I think it’s good for Rue to be here. I know that she and your boys have been experiencing a little tension, and I think we can clear it up so that everyone will be happy.”

I noticed that Dad didn’t invite them inside. That was unusual. Usually, Dad is very friendly with people, and it was raining. You remember how he made you hamburgers, Ms. M?

“Mr. Cyprus,” said Mrs. Sampson, clasping her hands in front of her. “I must insist that you put that dangerous animal away.”

Dad narrowed one eye as he looked at Daniel’s mother. “I can assure you, Mrs. Sampson, that Kasey is not a dangerous animal. She’s been to obedience school and is the sweetest dog I’ve ever met.”

“Then why did she attack our boys?” said Mrs. Sampson.

Dad did the squinting thing again, like he didn’t hear her quite right. “Attack your boys?”

“Attack and bite them, on numerous occasions.”

Dad crossed his arms. “I can assure you that Kasey did not bite anyone, Mrs. Sampson. My daughter has told me of two instances where Kasey barked at your boys when they were bullying my daughter and her friends.”

“Bullying?” said Mrs. Sampson, her voice rising.

I looked at Mr. Sampson, and he seemed like he wanted to disappear. He kept getting closer and closer to the stairs.

“Desmond, do you hear that?”

Mr. Sampson lifted a hand and rubbed the back of his neck, but he didn’t say anything.

“I think you should be aware that I am going to report these attacks to Animal Control, Mr. Cyprus,” said Mrs. Sampson, “and I wouldn’t be surprised if they come to take this dangerous dog away. She’s a menace* to the neighborhood.”

I knew menace meant something that causes harm, and I couldn’t take it anymore. “No, she isn’t!” I said, standing up. “Your sons are the menace. Dylan tried to take Billy Webber’s new soccer ball in the park, but Kasey barked at him. And just the
